The Difference Between Duffle and Sports Bags
The terms "duffle" and "sports" bags are not always interchangeable, and so the two terms are sometimes confusing. A duffle bag may sometimes also be referred to as a sports bag. But the term can also refer to other types of bags used for carrying sports equipment which are not necessarily "duffle" bags.
Duffle Bags are distinguished by their unique "barrel" shape. Although they aren't always perfectly cylindrical or symmetrical in shape like a barrel, any bag that is fairly large and barrel-like can be considered a duffle bag.
They typically have two types of carrying handles. First, they have two "loop" style handles near the top center of the bag for hand-carrying. Many duffle bags also have a third, "shoulder-strap" style handle so that the bag can also be carried over the shoulder, which is sometimes easier when the bag is packed full.
"Sports" Bags, on the other hand, come in other shapes besides "barrel" shape. One very common type of sports bag is the drawstring-top bag. This type is commonly used by school children. This type of bag is often used by adults too, particularly for purposes like going to the gym or participating in sports where only a limited amount of equipment is going to be used. They are much smaller than duffle bags, and are the perfect size to fit a pair of shoes, t-shirt and shorts.
